After graduating this year from NCAA Division I – University of Massachusetts, Leah McDerment has started a blog giving incredible insight into her journey from the UK to gaining a US collegiate scholarship.
With so many more UK based players wanting to gain US scholarships, Leah is being very open and honest about some of the ups and downs she has experienced. It’s a must read!
She is a product from Manchester Mystics and moved to London enrolling at Barking Abbey Academy before taking the leap to NCAA DI college. An England and GB International posting 4.1 PPG, 3.1 APP & playing over 28 MPG for a top collegiate program really shows her talent.
Below are some excerpts from her blog.
“I embarked upon the most rewarding, challenging, draining, exciting four years of my life, that flew by in the blink of an eye. One thing about college athletics is that if you haven’t done it, you will literally never understand. My best friends back home who are the most special people in the world, they don’t get it, my parents who entered this other world multiple times, they still don’t get it.”
And this is ultimately why I wanted to write this blog, to help people understand what it’s actually like behind the Instagram posts and stat sheets.
“To coaches you are just a potential candidate, the exact same as those applying for a job interview. If they end up preferring another candidate, they will drop you so fast you don’t even know its happened yet. Or if they really want you, they will be persistent and constantly seek communication with you, and I mean constantly.”
“I follow accounts on various social media platforms highlighting the young girls that are going from England over to the states, and I wondered what it would have been like for me at the age of 16/17 if I had something to read that was an honest insight to what this other world was like, so I’m going to attempt to be that person for somebody else.”
