The England U18 squad finished in 11th place in Division B European Championships.
England were in Group C with Estonia, Greece, Ireland and Macedonia where the top two teams would go through to the next stage of playing for 1-8 place.
The squad were not at full strength where the likes of Savannah Wilkinson and Paige Robinson were with the U20’s and other players weren’t available.
The first game saw the team lose to an aggressive Ireland going down 53-64 with shooting guard Harriet Swindells lading the way with 16 points. The team tried to get into winning ways against Estonia the next day but again just fell short going down 47-54 where Barking Abbey’s Imani Whittington chipped in with 11 points.
The task didn’t get any easier as they faced powerhouse Greece where despite a huge effort, the result didn’t go the way of England losing 58-75. Abby Lowe did what she could with 13 points and Chloe Gaynor tallied 8 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
England now needed a win and it came from a great team display against Macedonia with a comfortable 67-41 victory behind a monster double double of 10 points and 17 rebounds from Gaynor. This was supported again by Lowe with 14 points and Anna Popovic adding 12 points.
Next up was playing for a 9th place highest finish against Bulgaria where the team had momentum after their win which carried over to a 75-56 victory. Jo Lowry came up big with a tournament high 16 points but it was Gaynor again with 14 rebounds to continue her dominance of the boards.
The team needed to again make that final push to keep winning ways in tact but they couldn’t get passed Finland narrowly losing 50-59 which meant a re match with Estonia for a 11th place finish.
This time around England got the revenge winning 48-43 in a close encounter and it was Chloe Gaynor again who led the ship with another double double of 12 points and 15 rebounds to finish the Euro’s on a real high.
