Charnwood College Riders Women’s Basketball achieved a remarkable third place in the ISF World 3×3 Championships this weekend in Estonia.
The International Schools Sport Federation World 3×3 Championships featured 22 Nations competing for the World School Title in the Estonian capital of Tallinn.
Charnwood College Riders represented England at the event following a great domestic season for the young student-athletes. Head Coach Krumesh Patel selected first year Charnwood College students Nicole Hofmann, Ruchae Walton, Anna Popovic and Harriet Swindells (pictured left-right) as the four-person team to represent Charnwood College and Basketball England at the event.
The tournament began well for Charnwood with an upset victory over reigning Champions China by a single basket, boosting the teams confidence to come from behind to take a win over hosts Estonia then further victories over France and Latvia to sit at 4-0 at the end of day two of the tournament.
Day three saw Charnwood heavily tested in the final group game against Hungary but clutch shots from all players pulled the team through to an impressive undefeated group stage of the event. Quarter Final Action saw Charnwood College take a convincing victory over Portugal however eventual World Champions Slovakia proved too much in the Semi-Final of the competition with Charnwood losing out 10-15.
The team would bounce back in a gritty shoot-out style third place game that saw Charnwood top the Czech Republic to secure a place on the podium for the first time in the school’s history.
Congratulations to all players and coaches/staff involved – what an amazing achievement showing the world UK female ballers have game!
